Registration for this trip is by leader permission only.  All participants MUST have completed CMC's Winter Camping School OR have equivalent experience.  If you would like to register for this trip, please send an introduction and summary of your recent winter camping experience to the trip leader.

  • Due to unpredictable winter weather conditions, winter backpacking destinations will finalized within a week or two of the scheduled trip date and, typically, will be located within a 90-minute drive from the Denver area.  TENTATIVELY, THIS TRIP WILL TAKE PLACE ON BURNING BEAR TRAIL JUST NORTH OF GRANT, CO.
  • The trip leader reserves the right to change the trip date by pushing it back one week if potentially severe weather conditions threaten to impede our ability to safely complete the trip.
  • Meeting time, location, driving directions, and carpooling info will be provided via email prior to the trip date.
  • Due to unpredictable winter weather conditions, winter backpacking destinations will finalized within a week or two of the scheduled trip date and, typically, will be located within a 90-minute drive from the Denver area.

  • We will NOT be hiking or camping in avalanche terrain.
  • Only destinations with sufficient snow cover to pull a sled will be considered for this trip.
  • Campsites will typically be near or above 10,000' elevation.

Sample Trip Itinerary:

Day 1 -- Meet at trailhead by mid-morning.  Hike ~2-3 miles, 500-600' to campsite.  Setup camp.  Camp setup and subsequent chores like cooking, melting snow, etc. will likely consume a fair amount of our time.  If time permits, do an optional dayhike of 3-6 miles, <1000' and/or a short warmup hike before bedtime.

Day 2 -- Following breakfast, do optional dayhike if not completed the previous day.  Break camp and hike back to trailhead.

Emergency protocols and information specific to the actual trip location will be emailed to participants a few days in advance of the trip.

BPX is a community of backpackers who respect, trust, help each other, and honor our commitments.  By registering for this trip, you are committing to going on the trip and will cancel only for a true emergency.  And if absolutely necessary, you agree to cancel as early as possible so another member may take your place on the trip.

Required Equipment

  • Standard winter camping gear or appropriately repurposed three-season backpacking gear is required.  Review the links below if you need a refresher on what to bring for this type of trip.
  • Gear should include snowshoes and microspikes; extra-fuel canisters, a 2L pot, and a winter-worthy stove suitable for melting snow into water; and sufficient layers and insulation, both daytime clothing and sleep system, to stay warm down to ZERO degrees Fahrenheit, if needed, while remaining nimble enough to adapt to possible "warmish" daytime temperatures in the 30s. 
  • Food should include at minimum  two lunches, one dinner, one breakfast, and LOTS of snacks and hot drinks.
  • Avalanche gear is not required as we will not be traveling in avalanche terrain.
  • A sled is not required but can be helpful, particularly, if you are carrying older, heavier winter gear.
  • If you are thinking about building or buying a sled for this trip, let me know and I'll forward you diagrams and build instructions from CMC's Pulk Building
