Backcountry Skiing/Splitboarding – Commando Run Ski Traverse

This is an 18 mile traverse ski traverse from Vail Pass to the town of Vail. Following a historic training route used by 10th Mountain Division soldiers. There is approximately 3500 feet of elevation gain and 5800 feet of descent.

We will depart from Vail Pass at 6:00 am on Saturday January 21.

Vail recreation district requires a $10 per person fee.

This is a long one day push. AIARE 1 or equivalent avalanche education and previous ski touring experience required for trip participants. This  traverse follows exposed ridge lines for extended periods of time, if storms move in during the day solid route finding skills will be necessary to prevent accidental deviations into avalanche terrain.

Be prepared for an all day winter ski tour with extended sections above tree line exposed to the wind. Basic ski touring gear (AT skis or splitboard, skins, boots, poles, helmet) and avalanche rescue gear (beacon, shovel, probe) are required. Bring clothing layers similar to that which would be worn for a winter 14er which can be adjusted for temperature extremes (base layer, mid layer, shell and down puffy, hat, buff, gloves and mittens).
