Ascending Hikes – Roosevelt Lakes

A beautiful quiet winter hike up Tanglewood Creek, passing through great vistas and bristlecone pines, as we make our way to a high saddle before dropping down to Roosevelt Lakes.

  • Mileage: 10.5 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,870 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 11,981 ft
  • Pace: 1.5 mph with 1000' gain per hour

Meet at the pull-off by the Fort Restaurant (The Fort, 19192 CO-8, Morrison, CO 80465) at 6:30 am for a 6:45 am departure.  The road to the trailhead is maintained in the winter, but may be snowy, so we'll need SUVs for carpooling.

This is my favorite place to see bristlecone pines, and there is the added benefit of hiking along Tanglewood Creek and the views of Rosalie Peak.  We'll start at the Deer Creek Trailhead, follow the Tanglewood Creek Trail for about 2 miles, then begin easy switchbacks to treeline.  The saddle at Pegmatite Points is our high point at 11,980', then we'll drop down for about 3/4 of a mile and 250' to Roosevelt Lakes.  We'll return via the same route.

Please see the winter equipment listed in the required equipment section. Note that if it is below freezing most of the day, you need insulation for your water bottle, and camelback hoses can easily freeze.
