Ascending Hikes – Mt Silverheels

Date change to July due to snow conditions at top in June. Please plan to be flexible for this trip. The plan is to ascend 2,200 to 2,500 ft. partway up the slope to an elevation of between 12,200 -12,700 depending on how the group is doing and at a pace of between 1.9 to 2.4. Minimum climb will be to an elevation of 12,200 ft. with an ascent of 2,200 ft and about 8 miles round trip mileage. If the group is doing well we may ascend higher. We are ascending from the Gold Dust Trail and Trout Creek Trail near Como, Colorado.

As this is an Ascending Hike which is progressing in difficulty as the hiking season unfolds participants should be acclimated to altitudes above 10,000 ft. and have been consistently hiking  before signing up for this trip.  Participants should have a general moving pace of  2.2-2.5  mph at lower altitudes. At higher altitudes that may be a little lower.

My general rule of thumb on a steep ascent is to establish a pace that works for you, even if it is slower than others',  where you can sustain your pace for about a  30 minute interval. I promote being kind to your body, listening to what feels best while you are engage during an interval of walking,  and respecting each others' variability of pace allowing others to walk both faster and slower than yourself. The group will gather  together after an interval of walking for bio and rest breaks so that we stay together for the duration of the hike.

We will sit down near the highest elevation of this route for a snack/lunch break before heading down.
