Ascending Hikes – Greyrock Mountain TH - Greyrock Mountain Trail

We'll hike a loop route to the summit of Greyrock Mountain. One of Larimer County’s most popular hiking paths, Greyrock Mountain Trail offers an excellent year-round hiking experience, showcasing an amazing alpine lake. This trail was constructed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps and was designated as National Recreation Trail in 1979. This is the second of the NoCo Hot Rocks Hat Trick Series (Arthur's Rock, Greyrock, and Horsetooth Rock).

This will be a loop hike to the summit of Greyrock Mountain. Starting from the Greyrock Trail trailhead on Poudre Canyon Road, crossing the Cache la Poudre River, we'll hike to the first trail junction with the Greyrock Meadow Trail. We'll follow the Greyrock Meadow Trail to the junction with the Greyrock Summit Trail. From there we'll follow the trail for about 1 mile along the east facing side of Greyock Mountain until we reach the north face and then head south up the final ascent to the summit. This last ascent will require some moderate scrambling with little to no exposure. Our biggest challenge will be finding and following the trail. At or near the summit we'll find a few small lakes and plenty of spots to enjoy the views and a snack/lunch. For the more adventurous amongst us, there is a marked trail to the actual summit, which requires a bit more scrambling but the reward of 360 degree views, including great views of Hewlett Gulch and of the Snowy Range to the northwest. We'll return to the trailhead along the Greyrock Trail, completing the loop. Overall ~8 miles and ~2500 ft elevation gain. (Greyrock Mountain Loop - CalTopo)
