Advanced Snowshoe – East Portal TH - Forest Lakes

A ~8 mile, ~1800 ft elevation gain out and back snowshoe hike that gets us to both Lower and (maybe) Upper Forest Lakes in the James Peak Wilderness. We'll leave from the East Portal Trailhead and follow the South Boulder Creek Trail to the Forest Lakes Trail that will take us to both the Lower and Upper Forest Lakes.

Carpool Place & Time: Meet at the Plainville Rd Parking Area at 7:30am, for a 7:45am departure (9879 Plainview Rd - Google Maps)

We'll carpool to the Moffat Tunnel East Portal Parking (Moffat Tunnel East Portal TH Parking Lot - Google Maps)

We'll be hiking an out-n-back route from the East Portal Trailhead, following the South Boulder Creek Trail until we meet the Forest Lakes Trail. That will take us to Lower and (hopefully) Upper Forest Lakes. Upper Forest Lake is located below the CDT and has a view of Beacon Peak. Hopefully we can do a bit of exploring around the lakes, finding a nice spot to stop for lunch/snack. We'll return to the trailhead by the same route. Our pace will be determined by the strength, stamina, and endurance of the group. Overall, ~8 miles and 1800 ft elevation gain. (Forest Lakes - Lower & Upper - JPW - CalTopo)
