Alpine Scrambling is defined as unroped climbing over mountainous terrain. The CMC Denver Group’s Alpine Scrambling Course (DEN ASC) consists of self-guided online learning, 3 online weekday evening lectures, 1 in-person meet up (weekday evening), Student Skills Field Day (Snow Travel and Scrambling Skills) and 2 progressive Scramble Field Days.

Delivery of the course will heavily involve your time over May and June. You can view the 2024 Course to see actual dates HERE. Note for Field Days, there are two tracks: Saturday Group and Sunday Group.

Course Schedule: 

March 1st: Student Application Opens

May: 

  • Weeknight Online Lectures (3)
  • Weeknight In-person Meet-Up (1)
  • Self-Study: Online Self-Paced Content via CMC Learning Management System (Co-Assemble)
  • Bonus Fitness Hikes (4/these are optional)

June: 

  • Student Skills Field Day
  • Level 1 Scramble
  • Level 2 Scramble
  • Back-up/Weather

Course Prerequisite: Completion of the CMC class Wilderness Trekking School (WTS) or equivalent.

Fitness Requirement: Recent hiking completed at distances/elevation gain of 12-15 miles and 2500’-3500’ feet (this was the Denver C Hiker Classification.)

Northern Colorado Group

Northern Colorado Group offers the Alpine Scrambling school every other year. The next year it will operate will be April 2025.

Class curriculum includes:

  • Introduction to knots, rope handling, climbing harness / Tie-in and the belay
  • Rock climbing equipment (more detail) / techniques and the rappel
  • Basic snow composition and behaviors
  • Snowfield travel techniques
  • High Altitude Mountain health/medical issues (Martha Tissot van Patot)
  • High peak climbing

Pikes Peak Group

Rock Scrambling is the first course in the Pikes Peak Group’s Basic Mountaineering School (BMS) curriculum
