Whether you're dreaming of bagging a few of Colorado's famous 14ers or simply want to enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Rockies, Wilderness Trekking School (WTS) offers something for everyone. Here are a few highlights of the course and you'll hear directly from past course participants about what makes WTS a foundational course within Colorado Mountain Club.

A Comprehensive Course for All Levels

WTS is Colorado Mountain Club’s largest and most comprehensive course on mountain hiking. Whether you're a complete novice or a seasoned hiker looking to refine your skills, WTS is designed to meet you where you are. The course welcomes students of all ages, from 18 to 70+, and covers essential topics such as gear selection, map and compass navigation, weather awareness, nutrition and hydration, backcountry emergencies, travel techniques, avalanche awareness, and Leave No Trace principles.

I thought I knew a lot about being in the wilderness; being prepared. I learned a lot from the course and the instructors."

Learn to Travel Safely and Confidently

Not matter your experience level in the backcountry, WTS provides an invaluable opportunity to learn how to travel safely and confidently in the backcountry. You'll gain practical knowledge and hands-on experience that will empower you to explore the mountains with confidence. Even if you're an experienced hiker, WTS is a chance to review and enhance your skills, fill in any gaps, and learn new techniques that can make your adventures even more enjoyable and safe.

As an experienced hiker/backpacker outside the Rockies - I learned a lot about what it means to hike in the Rockies and picked up at least 3 new things with each field day. The most valuable were Rockies specific - weather, snow travel, low visibility, navigation, dealing with thunderstorms and lightning."

Hands-On Learning in a Supportive Environment

One of the best aspects of WTS is its hands-on approach to learning. Students are divided into small groups of 8-11, ensuring personalized attention and a supportive environment. You'll have the chance to view instructional videos, read the WTS Manual, and engage with your peers and instructors in meaningful discussions. Field days, which typically involve hiking five or more miles on trails, provide the perfect setting to practice what you've learned. With an instructor team consisting of a senior instructor and two assistant instructors, you'll be guided every step of the way. You'll plan and complete a hike with your field group, allowing you to apply your newfound skills in a real-world setting. WTS is not just about learning; it's about building confidence, making new friends, and becoming a part of a vibrant outdoor community.

Our instructors always gave us info in the field, things to note, scenarios, "what ifs" as we were hiking, so we were always learning on the trail!"

A Prerequisite for Further Adventure

If you're interested in taking your outdoor skills to the next level, WTS acts as a prerequisite for several other courses within CMC, including Backpacking School and Alpine Climbing School. By completing WTS, you'll be well-prepared to tackle more challenging adventures, knowing that you have the skills and knowledge to stay safe and enjoy the experience.

Super course for anyone wanting to head out into the backcountry or even hike local trails. It makes sense why this is the foundation for other hiking/climbing/mountaineering courses."

Join the Colorado Mountain Club Community

Beyond the skills and experiences you'll gain, WTS is also a fantastic introduction to Colorado Mountain Club. You'll have the opportunity to meet fellow outdoor enthusiasts, share your passion for the mountains, and become part of a community that values safety, stewardship, and adventure.

If you want to learn more about CMC, consider attending a New and Prospective Member Night. Our next meeting is August 21st - please join us to learn more! Spr10-0582.JPG
