We’ve all witnessed the incredible rise in trail use in Jefferson County over the past few years. To ensure the long-term health and enjoyment of these recreational spaces, Jefferson County has introduced new policies to manage the impact of increased trail traffic.

The Colorado Mountain Club (CMC) fully supports these efforts. Our trip leaders, course instructors, and members play an essential role as stewards of the outdoor community. Let’s work together to uphold these guidelines and ensure a positive experience for all trail users. Below are the updated policies to keep in mind when recreating on Jefferson County trails:

  • All CMC-led events—whether paid or unpaid—fall under our Commercial Use Permit. Trip leaders must carry a printed permit or a Permit Guide Pass at all times during the event.
  • Clarification for 2025: This includes our nonpaid for trips. Trip leaders and course instructors need to have the permit on hand during their event
  • Permit Guide Passes (in lieu of a printed permit) are available for pick up at the CMC office (10am-6pm Tues-Thurs or by appointment on Mon/Fri):
  • Blackout holidays – All climbing and trail based activities are prohibited from JCOS Parks on the following holidays:
  • Memorial Day Weekend - May 24-26
  • Father’s Day – June 15
  • Juneteenth – June 19
  • Independence Day Weekend – July 4-6
  • Labor Day Weekend – Aug 30-Sept 1

  • Group sizes limits:
  • Hiking groups are limited to 14 people per group.
  • Bike groups must separate into two groups with max 8 per group and spread out ¼ mile between groups
  • Be sure to follow Leave No Trace Practices on the trail. Pack out anything you pack in (especially dog waste bags)
  • Courtesy Trail Use – Remember to represent CMC while on the trails. We exist to bring people together and share our love of the mountains—and community. From the uninitiated to the expert, there is a place for everyone here! We want to promote positive interactions and shared use of Jeffco trails.

By adhering to these policies, we can support Jefferson County in preserving the natural beauty of its trails for future generations. Let’s continue to lead by example as responsible and respectful trail users.

For any questions about the new permitting policies or how to obtain a Permit Guide Pass, please contact the CMC office.
