Plan Ahead and Be Prepared:

  • Know Before You Go: Research your chosen trail! Check the trail's difficulty level, length, and elevation gain. Look up trail closures or advisories online or with park rangers. Let someone know where you're headed and when you expect to be back.
  • Pack Smart: Pack plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, and a first-aid kit. Consider bringing layers, especially if you'll be hiking in high-altitude areas where temperatures can drop quickly. Make sure you have the ten essentials before you head out.
  • Dress for Success: Opt for breathable, moisture-wicking clothing that will keep you cool and dry. Wear sturdy hiking boots or shoes that provide good ankle support. Don't forget sunglasses and a hat to shield yourself from the sun's rays.

Stay Sun-Smart:

  • Hydration is Key: Dehydration is still a risk on fall hikes. Drink plenty of water throughout your hike, even if you don't feel thirsty. Take regular breaks to sip and replenish your fluids.
  • Sun Protection: Apply sunscreen liberally and reapply every two hours (more often if you’re sweating). Don't forget to protect your lips with SPF lip balm and wear a wide-brimmed hat to shield your face and neck.

Be Trail-Wise:

  • Leave No Trace: Respect the environment by packing out all your trash and leaving the trail as natural as you found it. Practice proper trail etiquette; yield to uphill hikers and step aside for mountain bikers or horses.
  • Wildlife Encounters: Be aware of your surroundings and research potential wildlife encounters in your area. Learn how to identify animal signs and proper protocol for encountering wildlife.
  • Respect the Trail: Stay on designated trails to avoid damaging the environment and to prevent erosion.

Bonus Tip: Download a trail map or app to your phone for offline navigation in case you lose cell service. If you come across a problem during your hike, use our RIMS mobile app to report it so that land managers can address it quicker.

By following these simple tips, you can ensure your fall hikes are filled with fresh air, beautiful scenery, and unforgettable memories.
