About the Colorado Mountain Club (CMC)
The Colorado Mountain Club (CMC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting adventure, recreation, conservation, and education in the outdoors. Founded in 1912, CMC provides access to year-round activities, events, and schools tailored to a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts, from novices to experts. With over 6,000 members, CMC facilitates more than 3,000 trips annually and offers 250+ courses, fostering a dynamic community of adventure seekers and conservationists. The club serves a diverse population, including 7,000 K-12 students through youth programs across Colorado.
Position Overview
The Program Manager will lead and manage culturally responsive outdoor education programs in collaboration with Vive Wellness as part of the Belonging Colorado Grant program funding this position. This position will focus on expanding access to outdoor recreation through programs that integrate cultural competency, justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (DEI-B) principles, and health and wellness initiatives. Working across CMC’s adult and youth programming, the Program Manager will design and implement program initiatives including custom adult courses and family programs that cater to underserved communities, particularly focusing on culture competency with Latinx and other underrepresented groups in Colorado.
The role includes administrative oversight, volunteer management, and fostering partnerships that promote inclusivity in outdoor spaces. The Program Manager will work closely with Vive Wellness to promote wellness through outdoor education, while collaboration with Belonging Colorado will focus on fostering a sense of belonging and inclusivity for historically marginalized groups. Beyond the collaboration work VW & BCG the individual will help create programming opportunities for other groups.
This is a two-year grant cycle with ample opportunity to create revenue generating programs that support a long term position.
Key Responsibilities
1) Cultural Competency & Belonging Programming
- Program Development: Design, implement, and manage outdoor education programs that emphasize cultural inclusivity, bilingual instruction, and accessibility.
- Partnership Collaboration: Work with Vive Wellness and Belonging Colorado to develop programs addressing health disparities, wellness, and equity through outdoor recreation.
- Community Engagement: Connect with other program partners and diverse communities to understand their cultural needs, adapt programming accordingly, and foster belonging in outdoor environments including programming designed for families
- Program Integration: Incorporate cultural awareness and DEI-B principles into CMC’s new and existing course offerings and volunteer-led initiatives.
2) Program Management
- Custom Programming: Manage custom educational programs tailored to the needs of individuals and underserved communities, ensuring alignment with CMC, Vive Wellness, and Belonging Colorado’s missions.
- Volunteer Support: Train and manage volunteers to deliver culturally responsive outdoor programming.
- Bilingual Access: Oversee the creation and delivery of bilingual programming and ensure course materials and communications are accessible to all participants.
- Committee Representation: Serve as a staff representative on relevant internal committees and foster partnerships that advance DEI-B and health equity in outdoor programs.
3) Partnership & Collaboration
- Vive Wellness: Coordinate with Vive Wellness leadership to ensure that programming improves health outcomes through outdoor recreation and is culturally relevant.
- Belonging Colorado: Collaborate with Belonging Colorado to enhance inclusivity and belonging in all CMC programs, events, and courses.
- Community Outreach: Build relationships with local schools, families, and community organizations to develop promote program participation and engagement.
4) Administrative Support
- Logistical Oversight: Provide administrative support for program logistics, including managing communications, marketing efforts, and participant enrollment.
- Compliance: Ensure that all programs comply with internal policies, state regulations, and federal guidelines for nonprofit education and outdoor activities.
Required Competencies
- Experience: 3+ years in program management or outdoor education, with a focus on serving diverse populations and advancing inclusivity.
- Cultural Competency: Demonstrated experience working with diverse cultural, economic, and linguistic groups, particularly the Latinx community.
- Education & Leadership: Experience leading or managing culturally aware programs that integrate DEI-B principles.
- Outdoor Expertise: Skilled in outdoor activities, including hiking, climbing, and leading technical outdoor programs.
- Volunteer Management: Proven ability to support and manage volunteers in delivering custom, community-focused programming.
- Communication Skills: Bilingual fluency in Spanish is highly preferred; strong verbal and written communication skills are essential.
Preferred Competencies
- Passion for Diversity: Commitment to advancing outdoor opportunities for underrepresented groups and supporting DEI-B initiatives.
- Certifications:
- Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification is preferred.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in Office 365, Google Suite, and other program management tools.
