The Colorado Mountain Club (CMC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting adventure, recreation, conservation, and education in the outdoors. Founded in 1912, CMC provides access to year-round activities, events, and schools tailored to a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts, from novices to experts. With over 6,000 members, CMC facilitates more than 3,000 trips annually and offers 250+ courses, fostering a dynamic community of adventure seekers and conservationists. The club serves a diverse population, including 7,000 K-12 students through youth programs across Colorado.

Position Overview 

The Education Program Coordinator plays a key role in supporting CMC's educational programs, coordinating permitting needs, managing Wilderness Medicine courses, and facilitating scholarship opportunities. This position is crucial to ensuring the success of CMC's strategic goals, including expanding program capacity, developing leadership, and fostering diversity and inclusivity across its membership. 

Key Competencies 

1) Program & Permitting Management 

  • Collaborate with CMC leadership and volunteers to secure necessary permits for all CMC classes and courses, including Wilderness Medicine. 
  • Coordinate logistics, scheduling, and administration of CMC’s Wilderness Medicine courses (e.g., Wilderness First Aid, Wilderness First Responder) in partnership with Backcountry Pulse. 
  • Maintain strong relationships with land management agencies to acquire Special Use Permits for public lands across Colorado. 
  • Support volunteer instructors and leaders in preparing for courses and securing permits. 

2) Volunteer Support & Communication 

  • Serve as the primary contact for CMC volunteer leaders and instructors, providing guidance on course logistics, certification requirements, and technological support. 
  • Facilitate smooth communication between CMC, volunteers, and partner organizations. 

3) Administrative Support 

  • Manage course registrations, participant records, and instructor schedules related to Wilderness Medicine programming. 
  • Support marketing efforts for educational programs, including website updates and basic graphic design. 
  • Maintain gear inventories and ensure program readiness, including set-up and teardown of climbing or other course-related sites. 
  • Ensure compliance with CMC policies and relevant state/federal regulations related to land use. 

Required Competencies 

  • Experience: 3+ years in program management or outdoor education; administrative and volunteer coordination experience. 
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal skills; diplomacy and professionalism in guiding volunteers. 
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in Office 365, Google Suite, and spreadsheets (Excel). Basic knowledge of e-learning platforms and graphic design software. 
  • Outdoor Expertise: Background in outdoor recreation and risk management. Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification required (or ability to obtain). 
  • Organization: Ability to manage multiple programs, build relationships with external partners, and ensure effective program delivery. 
  • Physical Ability: Able to lift up to 45 lbs. 
  • Background Check: Successful completion required. 

Preferred Competencies 

  • Wilderness First Responder (WFR) or equivalent certification. 
  • Spanish fluency for working with diverse groups. 
  • Cultural Awareness: Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion principles, with an understanding of DEI-B practices in outdoor education.
