Participants in the clinic will initially attempt to identify the nature of a lower leg injury which will help decide whether it is prudent for the victim to do a walk-out, or whether a S&R rescue would be a better decision? Is it a minor twist, a major twist, or perhaps even a break?

If the victim agrees that a walk-out attempt seems like a good first start, the next step would be to stabilize that ankle to improve the odds of a good outcome.

Taping the injured ankle is always a good decision, and if the weather is acceptable, taping the bare ankle, then inserting the foot back into the boot may provide sufficient support to get the victim back to the trailhead. However, if the weather is threatening, and exposing the bare ankle to the elements seems problematic, you may opt to tape that ankle over the boot using a SAM splint.

Whichever option you elect, the victim’s injury must be monitored to ensure no follow-on complications. For the injured ankle class participants will need to monitor Circulation, Sensitivity, and Movement (the CSMs). This may be straightforward when dealing with a bare ankle, but how can this be done when the injured ankle is packaged up inside a boot?

And as a note on hygiene, participants will be grouped into teams of two, where partners examine and treat each other’s lower leg injury. So, please take basic steps to make this exercise more pleasant.

Prerequisite: At start of meeting provide proof of vaccination or proof of negative Covid test.

In addition, please your usual hiking boots, hiking socks, and your usual hiking pants with loose pant legs that can be rolled up
