THIS TRIP IS BEING OFFERED AGAIN ON THURSDAY DECEMBER 9.

THIS TRIP IS OPEN ONLY TO MEMBERS FULLY VACCINATED AGAINST COVID-19.

We will meet at the Wooly Mammoth Parking, Section BB (39.69737204646448, -105.2076423578297) and drive away promptly at 7:30 am

Each car carpool cost will be $20, divided among the participants, including the driver (66 miles x.30).

We'll start at the back of Echo Lake Campground. (39°39'22.9"N 105°35'40.5"W) The Captain Mountain Trail USFS #46 goes down to and then follows the Beaver Dam Creek drainage, which is eventually joined by other creeks, criss-crossing the streams as we go.  Our turn-around point is 4.5 miles out, at the Melvina Creek crossing, recalling that the way back from the turn-around point is up hill all the way back to the campground.

Note #1 FYI for the future:  After our turn-aound point, this trail eventually leads 2.5 more miles/1200' gain uphill to Captain Mountain (9869') including an approximate 1/4 mile scramble off-trail, to the summit.  So we will not go there, given the short daylight hours.  It would be a great summer OB hike from Echo Lake Campground totaling at least 14 miles and 3200' total gain.

Note #2 FYI for the future:  On the other side of Captain Mountain, the trail eventually enters the Mt Evans State Wildlife Area, requiring every hiker to have an SWA permit, and ends at Camp Rock Road. That area generally is open for hunters only in  the fall (GMU 39). A summer car shuttle or key exchange through-hike from the Echo Lake Campground TH to Camp Rock Rd TH would be at least 13 miles and 3400,' not including a summit of Captain Mountain along the way.
