All field days held at backcountry locations for which permits have been granted CMC by USFS.

Instruction by: CMC Level 1 Certified Instructors and Karin Pocock, AIARE Course Leader
Field Instructors include  Senior CMC AIARE Level 1 Instructors and assistants.  Field instructors will travel on skis,, split board and snowshoes.

Field Ratio of Instructors to Students: 1-6

Daily debriefs are held for each field session and are an integral component of the course.

Equipment:  Students must own or rent avalanche  locator beacon/shovel/probe.  Commercial retail outlets rent this equipment if students do not own.

Travel Mode:  Skis or Snowboard - students must be able to ski comfortably at High End of Moderate (Blue) Terrain.

The BIG PROBLEM  encountered each session is STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH BACKCOUNTRY SKIING AND SKINNING.  Downhill skiing and backcountry skiing are not the same.  If you have new equipment or are not proficient in the backcountry, rent snowshoes.  The field content is the same no matter what travel mode is used.

Snowshoe Travel - students must be able to travel with full packs, using poles with snow baskets

Experience:  Map Reading is critical to this school as students will be selecting travel routes in avalanche terrain

Classroom:  The AIARE 100-page Student Manual will be provided electronically closer to the field days.

Standard CMC Denver refund policy applies*

If you participate in winter activities such as Ice or Snow Climbing, Backcountry Telemark or Tour Skiing, Ski Mountaineering or Snowshoe in the backcountry, you want to know what AIARE Level 1 training can do for you.

If you want to become a Backcountry Winter Leader this class is required for certification of all CMC Denver Backcountry winter trip leaders.  Field days will be held IN AVALANCHE TERRAIN. Probe techniques and beacons will be used as components of Companion Rescue. Students need to have their own beacon, shovel, probe; rental of the avalanche package may be made from commercial retailers.

Decision Making in Avalanche Terrain Level 1 is a 3 day/24 hour introduction to avalanche hazard management that provides a basic understanding of avalanches, describes a framework for decision making and risk management in avalanche terrain.

Level 1 focuses on identifying the right questions, rather than on providing answers and gives lessons and exercises that are practically oriented, useful, and applicable in the field

Learning Outcomes:

Plan and prepare for travel in avalanche terrain

Recognize avalanche terrain

Describe a basic framework for making decisions in avalanche terrain

Learn and apply effective companion rescue

Denver Leaders - apply for tuition free AIARE Level 1 through the SALT (Support Aid for Leader Training) program. You need to have led 3 winter trips (between November and April) in the 15 month period prior to your application to qualify. If you are a senior school instructor, your field trips (November thru April) count as qualifying trips.
