Do you participate in hut, ice climbing, or winter camping trips? Carrying the bulky and sometime heavy gear required for winter activities or multi-day trips in the mountains has always been difficult. Modern-day outdoor-sportsters have taken notice of equipment development and transportation used by peoples of the far North for centuries - the sled (aka sleighs, sledges, and pulks). Pulks now find popular use in winter trips in Colorado. This seminar by speaker Ron Stokley will briefly cover the history of pulks, cover features and considerations of a good sled, and present an example design that has proven over years of use and design refinement. In the past, those seeking a sled for winter pursuits in the high country had only two options: very expensive, foreign-made pulks; or DIY (Do It Yourself) builds. Now a US company has kits that may be purchased (starting at $200, with discount to those attending the seminar). Attendees may opt to purchase sled kits or components after the clinic.

About the speaker: Ron Stokley has presented on pulk construction and usage at outdoor sports vendors such as JAX and REI and to special groups including the Boulder Lightpackers and Colorado Mountain Club. Ron’s first experience with pulks was on a yurt trip, where he discovered Ed Bouffard 's Wilderness Systems, aka skipulks.com. Ed, a Cascade NP Ranger, developed his pulks for, among other places, 10th Mountain Hut trips. EWS offered complete pulks that were much cheaper than those available from commercial vendors.

Snacks and beverages starting at 6:30 pm.

Lecture (about 60 minutes) will start at 7:00 pm

Hopefully we can all join for the in person event, then feel free to mingle and take a look at example sleds before and after the lecture.
