The Lower Monument Canyon trailhead begins outside of the Monument, in between the East and West entrances, just off CO 340/Broadway. Once on Broadway, do not follow signs into Colorado National Monument.
From I-70:
Take the Fruita exit (Exit 19). Go south on CO 340 toward Colorado National Monument. Drive past the west entrance station and continue another 3.8 miles on CO 340. Watch for a small brown NPS hiking sign. Turn right onto the gravel road (it appears you are on a driveway) and down the hill 0.1 mile to the parking lot.
From Hwy 50/1st Street in Grand Junction:
Take CO-140/Broadway west. Follow Broadway approx. 8 miles. Just past the Deer Park subdivision, watch for a small brown NPS hiking sign. Turn left onto the gravel road (it appears you are on a driveway) and down the hill 0.1 mile to the parking lot.
A porta-pottie is available at the trailhead.

The classic Colorado National Monument hike! After a brief downhill section, the trail gradually climbs to the base of the iconic Independence Monument, past sheer red rock and sandstone walls. We’ll watch for blooming cacti, spring wildflowers and if we’re lucky, bighorn sheep as we head back to the trailhead.
