Meet at 9:00 AM at Wooley Mammoth Park & Ride Section MM.  We will stop at the Georgetown Visitors Center for a "nature" stop.

The Trailhead is very near the I-70 exit for Silver Plume. Exit and turn left and then an almost immediate right.  Follow the snow-covered dirt road a short distance and park at the dead end on the south side of the road. There is room for maybe three cars, but there is a larger space a few yards down the road.  If the road is blocked, there is ample parking at the Loop RR parking lot, although adding to the trip distance.

This is a short ski tour and meant to be an introduction to x-c skiing but not on flat terrain. Skins are not needed but herringbone  skis with metal edges work best.  I recommend applying a "glide" wax to the ski bottom both in front of and behind the herringbone scales area using a flat cork to smooth it out. A hard wax like a green hardness works well.

The entire trip is a gentle, steady uphill grade following the old RR grade of the Argentine Central Railroad.  We will only go to the first switchback which will take 1hr15min if few stops. The pace will be easy with frequent water and clothing stops.  If new snow, we wil try to proceed single file, so as to provide a good ski track for the way down. The downhill is a gentle glide and you may choose to practice with your kick-glide technique to gain more speed and rhythm. It will take about 35-40 minutes back to the car(s).

When we reach the first switchback (our destination), we will stop for a snack and maybe spend 1/2 hour there.  So pack some sort of sitting pad if choosing to sit in the snow.  Plan to fill your water bottle(s) with hot water or cocoa before leaving home.

The trail is totally shaded, so sun glasses or goggles are not needed.

Leaving Wooly Mammonth at 9:00 will put us back there at about 1:00.

This trip is sponsored by the RMOTHG, but is open to all CMC members.

For those who would like a bit more to eat, in the past we have had lunch in Georgetown.  But because of Covid restrictions, we will not have a lunch stop.  But we should be back at Wooly Mammouth in time for us to leave for separate lunches.

Let me know of any medical issues via email. I will check my email the night before if anyone needs to cancel. I'll also send out any necessary weather details.

Check out the Denver Group website:  It's has more information than the regular CMC website.

Sorry it is past the registration deadline for this event.
