January 20th at 6pm: Evening classroom session in Colorado Springs (Location to be determined)

January 23th at 7am-1pm: Camp Alexander BSA in Lake George, CO

Time to swing some ice!

This is the final module in the 2021-2022 BMS series. Completion of this course allows certification in the BMS Alpine Mountaineering track. Congratulations!

We will spend the day learning how to swing ice tools and crampons, with multiple opportunities for you to ice climb. We will also learn about alpine ice travel including travelling on fixed lines on ice.

It is required that you've completed our BMS Wilderness Fundamentals class prior to taking this class.  BMS Rock Climbing class or equivalent belay, knot tying, and rappel skills are also required. If you have not taken BMS Rock Climbing you must meet with the instructor before class to pass a belay/knot/rappel test, then you can register. The belay test cannot be taken within a week of the class, it is your responsibility to reach out to the instructor and schedule it.

Classroom date is 20 January. The field session is 23 January. To receive permission and the passcode to register, please contact Derek Sardinta at and provide your qualifications.

Regarding gear: Normal climbing gear is required (helmet, harness, ATC belay device, 3 locking carabiners, personal anchor system or double length sling, prussik cord or hollow block), Your boots MUST BE full shank or 3/4 shank mountaineering boots, typical winter hiking boots (Keen or similar) will not work for ice climbing.  They are too flexible for the crampons. Boots can be rented locally at Mountain Chalet. You will need clear safety glasses for eye protection. Contact Derek Sardinta with any questions or concerns about gear.

Crampons and ice tools are available for your use. You are, of course, welcome to purchase these items before the class, but they can be quite expensive (especially the ice tools). It is recommended that you try the tools that the club and instructors bring to the field sessions to see what works best for you before making that kind of investment..

Warm layers to include a heavy belay coat, hard shells, multiple pairs of gloves, gaiters, warm socks, long underware, hats and balaclavas are recomended. We will be in the shade and conditions can get very cold while belaying.

There is a $20 cancellation fee. No refund will be provided within 7 days of the class for any reason. Refunds will not be issued if you fail the belay test.

There will be an optional ice climbing trip to The Ouray Ice Park February 25th - 27th for students who complete this course. Spots are limited due to permit requirements so talk to the instructor if you are interested. The trip will be posted on the calendar.
