Survival Day

This is the field day for survival information. To be eligible to go on this trip - you must be a registered participant of Day Hiker School and have completed three things within the Survival Module – read the material, watched the video, and completed the quiz. I will send out the passcode separately to those who qualify. Please reach out if you have not received this code.

We will be near Winter Park Ski Area, so there can be weather issues and maybe some cooler weather. Please plan appropriately – meaning lots of water, layers and sun protection. The pace will be dictated by the participants. We will however be stopping frequently and going over different teaching points. So this will NOT be strenuous hike.

What to bring

Ten essentials – As always!!! Especially need overnight gear and navation.
Plenty of water – at LEAST 2 liters and sun protection
Your ropes
Please bring a lunch – I am planning on being back some time between 3 and 4

Time – we will meet at Wooly Mammoth Park-n-Ride, near I-70 and the road to Morrison or Red Rocks (exit 259). We will meet at section DD. We will carpool from there. If you do not feel comfortable doing so, please feel free to drive on your own.

Please bring your compass. You will need a compass with declination for the navigation portion of this course. The compass recommended by the school is the Suunto MC-2. Please plan to purchase one prior to taking navigation. We will start to cover the navigation material on this trip.

We often will stop for an after hiking social. This will be in Idaho Springs. This is an optional part of the hike, but often a great time.

Please review the CMC protocol for COVID.

Mike O’Connor

PS – if we carpool there is a protocol for reimbursing the driver based on 40 cent a mile divided by the number of people in a car. So, the total to be paid would be 80 miles x 40 cents equaling $32. If there are four people in the car (including the driver) each person would owe $8.00. The driver usually pays an equal share.
