  • The American Mountaineering Center is located on the corner of 10th Street and Washington Avenue in downtown Golden. 
  • Parking is available in the parking lot north of the building (9th street & Jackson).
  • Please use the north entrance (across from CoorsTek).

Directions from Boulder:

  • South on Highway 93. Turn left (E) onto highway 58. Exit onto Washington Ave. Right (S) on Washington Ave. Left (E) on 9th street. Right (S) on Jackson Avenue, Right into the parking lot behind the building.

Directions from South Denver:

  • West on 6th Avenue. Right (E) on highway 58. Right at the Washington exit. Right (S) onto Washington Ave. Left (E) on 9th street. Right (S) on Jackson Avenue, Right into the parking lot.

Directions from North Denver:

  • West on I-70. Take exit 265 onto highway 58 (W), to Golden. Exit at Washington Avenue. Left (S) onto Washington Ave. Left (E) on 9th street. Right (S) on Jackson Avenue. Right into the parking lot.

Directions from Southwest suburbs:

Directions from Mountains and West:

  • East on I-70. Take Exit 259, Morrison/Golden. Turn left (N) onto highway 40. After about a mile, look for left turn lane onto Heritage Road. At the third stoplight turn left (W) onto 6th Avenue. Right (E) on highway 58. Right at the Washington St. exit. Right (S) onto Washington Ave. Left (E) on 9th street. Right on Jackson Ave and into the parking lot.

Details

OVERVIEW



This Wilderness First Aid course teaches students the skills to anticipate risks and hazards, identify medical, traumatic, environmental problems, recognize life-threatening issues, initiate basic care and deliver a cohesive report. The curriculum forces students to think creatively, adapt to ever-changing situations, and learn valuable leadership, decision making and communication skills. There are no prerequisites and courses are open to students 18 and over. This course also satisfies the requirements for CMC trip leaders.



FORMAT




  • The course will begin with eight hours of self-paced learning in the form of readings, videos, and quizzes and conclude with one eight-hour day of in-person training consisting of engaging lectures integrated with practical scenarios and skills practice sessions. 




  • Registration will close and students will gain access to all materials one week prior to the in-person field session. ​Before registering for this field day, make sure you have ample time to complete the eight hours of self-paced work. 



​​IN-PERSON SCHEDULE




  • 9 AM to 6 PM (included 1-hour lunch break)

  • This day may take place inside or outside so be prepared for a variety of weather conditions.

✓ Clipboard or hard surface to write on



✓ Watch with second hand or digital second (or cell phone with a timer)



✓ Personal hand sanitizer



✓ Water, snacks & lunch (or money to buy lunch in Golden)



✓ Closed-toe shoes (i.e. hiking boots or trail runners)



✓ Day pack packed with the gear you primarily recreate with- this could be filled with climbing gear/ski equipment etc. We want you to bring gear you normally carry so you can practice improvising with the equipment you already own



✓ Lunch (or money if you plan on buying food in Golden)



✓ Clothing layers that allow you to be comfortable for outdoor skills practice and a variety of weather conditions



✓ Sunglasses/hat



✓ Camp chair or pad



✓Sleeping pad (for scenarios)



CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS




  • Students must complete all self-paced learning modules, the in-person field session, and written/practical testing in order to receive their Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification.

  • PDF certification cards will be sent via email after students complete the multiple-choice final exam with a minimum score of 70% or higher.

  • All certifications are valid for two years with no grace period. Certifications can be kept current by taking a 16-hour WFA course within the two-year period.



Successful course completion will earn the following Backcountry Pulse Wilderness Medicine certification:




  • Wilderness First Aid with Epinephrine Auto-Injector Training

Colorado Mountain Club Cancellation Policy

31 DAYS OR MORE BEFORE SCHOOL: 

Full refund less $35/person processing fee OR full credit can be transferred to a future session of the same school without incurring a processing fee. This can only be done once and credit can only be transferred to a school that is on the CMC calendar at the time of cancellation. If a future session is not available then a refund will be issued, less the aforementioned fee.

8 TO 30 DAYS BEFORE SCHOOL: 

Full refund less 25% of the fee paid but no less than $35/person processing fee OR full credit can be transferred to a future session of the same school without incurring a processing fee. This can only be done once and credit can only be transferred to a school that is on the CMC calendar at the time of cancellation. If a future session is not available then a refund will be issued, less the aforementioned fee.

7 DAYS OR LESS BEFORE SCHOOL: 

No refund will be granted. Credit cannot be transferred to a future session.
