This Wilderness First Aid course teaches students the skills to anticipate risks and hazards, identify medical, traumatic, environmental problems, recognize life-threatening issues, initiate basic care and deliver a cohesive report. The curriculum forces students to think creatively, adapt to ever changing situations, and learn valuable leadership, decision making and commutation skills There are no prerequisites and courses are open to students 18 and over. This course also satisfies the requirements for CMC trip leaders.


  • The course will begin with eight hours of self paced learning in the form of readings, videos, and quizzes and conclude with one eight hour day of in-person training consiting of  engaging lectures integrated with practical scenarios and skills practice sessions. 

  • Registration will close and students will gain access to all materials one week prior to the in-person field session. ​Before to registering for this field day, make sure you have ample time to complete the eight hours of self paced work. 


  • 9 AM to 6 PM (included 1-hour lunch break)

  • This day may take place inside or outside so be prepared for a variety of weather conditions.

✓ Clipboard or hard surface to write on

✓ Watch with second hand or digital second (or cell phone with a timer)

✓ Personal hand sanitizer

✓ Water, snacks & lunch (or money to buy lunch in Golden)

✓ Closed toe shoes (i.e. hiking boots or trail runners)

✓ Day pack packed with the gear you primarily recreate with- this could be filled with climbing gear/ski equipment etc. We want you to bring gear you normally carry so you can practice improvising with the equipment you already own

✓ Lunch (or money if you plan on buying food in Golden)

✓ Clothing layers that allow you to be comfortable for outdoor skills practice and a variety of weather conditions

✓ Sunglasses/hat

✓ Camp chair or pad

✓Sleeping pad (for scenarios)


  • Students must complete all self-paced learning modules, the in-person field session, and written/practical testing in order to receive their Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification.

  • PDF certification cards will be sent via email after students complete the multiple-choice final exam with a minimum score of 70% or higher.

  • All certifications are valid for two years with no grace period. Certifications can be kept current by taking a 16-hour WFA course within the two-year period.

Successful course completion will earn the following Backcounty Pulse Wilderness Medicine certification:

  • Wilderness First Aid with Epinephrine Auto-Injector Training




PLEASE NOTE: This course is only open to students 18 years and over.

Colorado Mountain Club Cancellation Policy For Free Tuition

There will be a $25 fee for leaders or instructors who wish to cancel or transfer their registration less than eight days before the course. This provides us with sufficient time to move other leaders or instructors from the waitlist.
