Details

This hike is intended for New and Prospective Northern Colorado CMC members. On-line Registration will not open until after August 21 (after the Poudre River Festival) and New/Prospective Members will be given priority ……sorry about that. If it does not fill with New/Prospective Members by September 7th then it will be open to all others. If you are not a New or Prospective Member you can contact me now and I will put you on a waitlist.

The McConnell Summit Trail is a scenic loop hike in the Cache la Poudre Wilderness Area. It offers great views of the Poudre Canyon, Poudre River, and the surrounding mountain ranges (well that is what Lisa says in The Best Fort Collins Hikes and she wouldn’t lie).

Note that this hike is approximately 4.5 miles and has 1550 to 1680 ft elevation gain. We will be going at a “moderate” pace, but this hike has slightly more elevation gain than going to Horsetooth Rock. Sooooo, if you find going to Horsetooth Rock or Arthur’s Rock is a RIGHT AT or a bit above what you like to do then this hike may be too much for you (New Members should note that on CMC trips the group stays together).

We will have two options for this hike depending on the strength of the group. For both options from the trailhead the group will walk towards the campground then up the Kreutzer Nature Trail. After approximately 0.8 miles on this trail we will turn on to the Mt. McConnel Trail towards the summit of Mt. McConnell (7998 ft).  After taking the spur to the summit we will come back down to the Mt. McConnell Trail. At this point we can turn left go back down the Mt. McConnell trail the way we came, then turn right on the Krueutzer Nature Trail to go down on that trail a different way than we came up. This portion of the Krueutzer Nature Trail goes up and down through drainages approximately six times (just to get your heart rate up).

The other option is to turn right after we return from the summit and take the Mt. McConnell Trail down to the southeast. This option does not add much mileage, but it does add elevation gain of about 100-120 feet, it is listed as a “primitive” trail, and is very steep in sections. It is certainly not technical, but it is not maintained with “nice steps” like the Arthur’s Rock Trail in Lory State Park. The primitive trail meets the Kreutzer Nature Trail after approximately 1.6 miles. Here we would turn right and proceed down that trail to the trailhead. After summiting Mt. McConnell we will discuss the two options as a group and decide which way to go, the entire group will stay together.

Ride Share from the Fort Collins meeting spot will be $6. Note this is a fee area, but if we have enough participants with America the Beautiful Senior Passes we may be able to get by ……. hey there are PLENTY of things that make being a senior crummy, we need to take advantage of things where we can J

Notes

New/Prospective Members will be able to register for the trip starting on August 21 - HOWEVER, if you are not a New/Prospective member I will take you off the register and put you on a waitlist. IF the trip does not fill up with I will add folks from the waitlist starting on September 7.
