John Raich,

The Sundance North Face Couloir is adjacent to, but not the same as, the popular Sundance ski descent. It provides a good location with easy access for practicing your snow climbing skills at angles averaging 45 degrees.

The approach from Trail Ridge Road in short, about 20 minutes to the top of the couloir. We will access the couloir from the top and practice on the upper few hundred feet of snow. Several choices of routes are available.

Participants should have familiarity with self-arrest and the use of ice ax and crampons, ascending and descending steep snow, and rope tie-in and basic climbing gear. On this climb, we will discuss and practice snowpack assessment and stability, roped ascent and descent, snow anchors, belaying on snow, climbing with mixed rock/snow conditions, use of climbing gear. Gear needed: mountaineering boots, ice ax, crampons fitted to your boots, gaiters, climbing harness, helmet, a 120 cm (48") sling, a locking carabiner, pack large enough to carry some group gear.

This trip is dependent on appropriate snowpack and weather conditions.

By signing up for this trip, participants agree to share contact information with other participants.

We'll follow CMC Covid-19 protocols:
