     Develop your abilities to find your way in mountains and backcountry.  All who seek good navigation skills for wilderness, including users of maps, compasses, and electronic devices for navigation, will be able to travel more confidently and effectively with knowledge from this course. 

     Course content includes: How to read topographic maps. Using map symbols and contour lines to find  elevations,  identify valleys, ridges, and other features. Match features you see in the field to those on the map. Skills for using a compass, identify  directions,  use a compass to find a bearing, follow a bearing, orient the map, use magnetic declination. Use coordinate systems, latitude, longitude, UTM, Different types of maps, map scales, measuring distance on a map, measuring distance traveled. Techniques for following a route, identifying your position, traveling in low visibility.

     The course is for people beginning with navigation skills or refreshing skills. It also offers useful intermediate skills for those ready to bump up their navigation abilities.

        The course has interactive online evening sessions, applicable homework exercises, and a one-day field trip.  Please sign up only if you can participate in all three evening sessions, the homework, and the field day.

     On-line evening meetings (6:00 pm to roughly 9:00 pm) (Each student to attend all meetings.)

           - Monday, April 26

           - Thursday, April 29

           - Monday, May 3

     Field trip (8:00 am to roughly 4:00 pm) 

           - Saturday May 15   (Another section has a trip Saturday May8) (Each student to attend one field day, not both.)

     The course has two sections listed on the calendar. They differ only in date of the field trip.

     When registering, please also ensure your cmc member information has a current email address so we can send you an email with instructions for using the class webpage and for connecting to the meetings.

     The trip involves a slow-paced hike of up to 5 miles and up to 1100 feet gain.

     COVID Precautions:     For the field trip, safety precautions include use of masks, minimum separation between people of 6 feet, and maximum group size of 10 people.

     For the on-line meetings, you will need an internet-connected computer.   Access to internet is also needed to visit a  class website, which is used for key documents and homework.

     Prerequisites: None, but in order to be prepared for backcountry, you also should take a course that teaches other fundamentals, including appropriate clothing, weather, hazards, method of "10 essentials", survival priorities, and ability to handle an unplanned overnight stay.
