Details

Description: This 1 mile trail accesses the beautiful Windsor Lake in the Holy Cross Wilderness. Optional hike around the lake on day 2. Abundant wildflowers in the season.

Friendly and fit backpacking dogs are welcome but not required.  Dogs must be leashed at all times and owners are required to pack out or burry waste. Please indicate if you plan to bring your dog when you register for the trip.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Drive to TH near Leadville (approx. 2 hrs). Hike up to Windsor Lake, just over 1.0 mile but very steep! (850ft elevation). You will pass a lovely un-named lake and say “oh cool’ but when you arrive at Windsor Lake you will say “oh wow!”. The trail is well-marked and the views and setting are breathtaking. Camping is recommended along the east side of the lake. There are two streams flowing into the lake on that side for purifying water. Bushwhack up the hill from the second stream, and you'll find several great camp sites with views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

Day 2: Optional hike around Lake (will need to scramble in parts), other day hikes to explore the area, fishing, hang out at camp

Day 3: Break camp and descend one mile back to the TH

General Requirements: Camping must be at least 100 ft away from water.
