Details

The Pikes Peak Group (PPG) Trip Leader School (TLS) provides a self-paced online curriculum (Google Classroom), a 3-hour online meeting (Zoom), and a 5-hour Leader-In-Training field trip to review important trip leader topics such as trip planning, group dynamics, situational awareness, communication skills, leadership, CMC policies, and leader liability considerations. The TLS is the first step to certification as a CMC Trip Leader.

** Key Dates: Online Course Work, April 5-19 / Online Meeting April 19th (6:00-8:30pm) / Field Day April 24th 7:00am to 1:00pm**

The TLS helps ensure CMC Trip Leaders:

- Know and follow established CMC trip procedures.

- Can make sound decisions for and sometimes with the group, in a variety of outdoor conditions.

- Facilitate positive group dynamics.

- Are confident in dealing with conflict and/or emergency situations in an appropriate manner.

To become a trip leader – you must:

1. Be a CMC member at least 18 years of age and have been a participant on at least five CMC trips.

2. Satisfactorily complete the Trip Leader School Program (including practice “co-leading” two trips, as stated below).

3. Have a current Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification or higher.

The nominal TLS registration fee will be refunded to PPG members who successfully complete all the Trip Leader program requirements (class / co-leads / WFA certification).

Program Delivery. Three (3) Events

-Online Study. The online curriculum leads students through the CMC Trip Leader manual with an emphasis on the important role trip leaders play in ensuring fun and safe outdoor trips while understanding the responsibilities trip leaders have and the CMC resources available. Self-paced study includes reading the Trip Leader Manual, knowledge checks, trip planning, discussion on high performance teams, trip leader liability, anatomy of a disaster, and how to manage trips on the cmc.org site (permissions given when certification is complete). Online study and quizzes must be done before the online meeting. Online access info will be sent 2 weeks before the online meeting.

-Online Meeting. The Zoom meeting highlights and reviews the online curriculum, provides a forum for addressing questions, and gets student ready for the field day – which includes preparing for a notional trip as if the student was the trip leader.

-Field Day. The Leader-In-Training (LIT) hike is a 5-hour field trip conducted on local Open Space hiking trails where candidates will engage in role playing, working through potential real-life scenarios, and having discussions with Instructor Leaders on best practices for working through situations they may face while leading trips. Students are given specific guidelines for arranging their Leader-In-Training co-lead trips and for applying to become a trip leader.

*** PREREQUISITE:  Must be 18 years old or older to take this course and must have successfully completed PPG’s BMS Wilderness Fundamentals and BMS Land Navigation or possess equivalent demonstratable knowledge/experience ***
