Basic Ice Climbing School (BICS) at the Ouray Ice Park in Ouray Colorado

Pre-class February 17, 2021

Ouray, CO -February 19-21, 2021

The classes would be a half-day on Friday, a full day on Saturday followed by a half-day on Sunday. There would also be one mandatory one pre class meeting to go over gear, fit crampons, harness check and questions.

Commitments and payments would need to be in 30 days before the class. There would be a minimum of 3 students and a maximum of 4. Ice climbing/mountaineering boots are mandatory and need rented or purchased. Boots may be available for rent at Bentgate Mountaineering in Golden or Neptune Mountaineering in Boulder. Ice climbing crampons and ice tools will be provided.  If you already own ice tools and or water ice crampons feel free to bring them. (3 days, per person)

Colorado Mountain Member Price  $285 (min 3 participants max 4)

Course Curriculum includes:

• Ice climbing movement skills

• Anchor selection, construction, and equalization

• Anchor station management

• Ice climbing and crampon usage techniques

• Ice protection

• Rope management

• Rappelling and belaying in an alpine setting

Hazard assessment including: discussion of objective vs. subjective hazards, assessment of avalanche danger, rock and ice fall dangers

Pre class meeting discussions include proper clothing and ice climbing equipment for survival in an alpine setting, efficient, competent and self-dependent climbing techniques, and Leave No Trace ethics.  You MUST bring your Ice Climbing Boots

QUALIFICATIONS: Students should know basic climbing skills such as belaying, rappelling and tie-in knots.

Students provide:

• Climbing Harness

• Belay Device (ATC required) and Grigri if you have one. OK for belaying, not for rappelling.

• Prussic or Hollow Block

• PAS (preferred)  or Double Length Runner

• Helmet (helmets are available at no cost please not

• An in depth gear list would be provided prior to the class.

Not included: Transportation, accommodations, meals, snacks and personal gear.
