Location

Join us for our first ever all Women Trip Leader School on Sunday, March 8 2020, in honor of International Women's Day! The Denver Trip Leader School will be held from 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM at the American Mountaineering Center.

8:00AM - 11:30AM - Class session, Baker Classroom, at the CMC Building, 710 10th Street, Golden
12:00 AM - 4:00PM - Leader-In-Training, (LIT) hike. Location will be in one of the nearby Open Space Parks such as White Ranch, Matthew Winters, and Mount Galbraith. 

The Prerequisites for Attending Trip Leader School are:

  1. Be a CMC member.
  2. Complete 3 CMC trips.
  3. Take the Wilderness First Aid (WFA) class, have a valid WFA certificate, or if you qualify for a waiver based on equivalent certification, contact Jeff Flax to be granted a waiver.  (jeff.flax@gmail.com).  Concurrent enrollment in TLS and WFA is acceptable. 

To Enroll in Trip Leader School:

  1. Complete a Trip Leader School application which can be found here.
  2. The Trip Leader School Director reviews the applicant’s records, emails approval and sends the Pass Code for enrolling.
  3. Applicant logs onto the CMC website (https://www.cmc.org/Calendar/Classes.aspx) and enrolls in Trip Leader School using the designated password.

Details

The school provides a 4-hour lecture on topics such as trip planning, group dynamics, situational awareness, communication skills, leadership, CMC policies, and leader liability considerations.  The Leader-In-Training (LIT) hike is a 4-hour field trip conducted on local Open Space hiking trails where candidates will engage in role playing, working through potential real-life scenarios, and having discussions with Instructor Leaders on best practices for working through situations they may face while leading trips.  Students are given specific guidelines for arranging their final Leader-In-Training hike and for applying to become a trip leader.



There is No Fee for the Trip Leader School but it is necessary to submit the application for attending.




  1. Students apply using the on-line application at: Trip Leader School Application

  2. CMC reviews applications and certifies qualifications for each applicant

  3. CMC assigns passcodes for TLS and sends emails to qualified applicants
