Location

Capitol Peak is in the Elk Mountains due west of Aspen, CO.

We will hike the standard Northeast Ridge route. We will hike into Capitol Lake, go up over the Capitol-Daly saddle, up the basin veering right up to K2, over the "knife edge" and up the northeast ridge to the summit.

We will return the same way.

Details

Sunday: 5 Sept 2021:



Tentative Plan based on final Carpooling plan.  



We will meet at 7am the Safeway: 3275 W Colorado Ave, Colorado Springs, CO 80904.



Here we will carpool to the Capitol Creek TH.



Plan to be at the Capitol Creek TH and hiking around noon where we will hike up to Capitol Lake. It is about 6 to 6 1/2 miles. We will pitch tents and spend the night.



Each party overnighting in the MaroonBells-Snowmass Wilderness is required to self-register at the Trailhead and to carry a copy of the registrationwith them during their visit. There is no fee charged and no limit to the number of permits issued.



Monday: 6 Sep 2021:



Plan to be hiking by 5:00am.  



After climbing the peak, we will return to Capitol Lake; pack up and hike out.  Potential to grab late lunch in Aspen or Buena Vista.



 




Notes

 

​​​​ALERT: Due to recent bear activity, bear canisters are required for all backpackers in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness.

Be prepared for MOSQUITOES, BITING FLIES, STINGING NETTLE

Reguired gear:

Helmet; summit pack; micro-spikes; rain/early winter layers and 10 Essentials.

  • Every participant must be a current member and have a current signed waiver on file.  This includes instructors, trip leaders
